“Musical excellence is rewarding, exciting and what we ultimately aim to achieve, but we also value the process. The friendships that have been built, the skills we learn from one another week after week, the joy, the tears and the laughter... it is because of all these experiences that we excel.”

Makkipok! with NSO Sinfonia - March 3

Makkipok! Labrador Inuit Music for Passiontide and Easter

Saturday, March 3, 2017
Basilica of St. John the Baptist

Featuring: Lady Cove Women’s Choir, Newman Sound Men’s Choir, Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra Sinfonia, and Deantha Edmunds, Soprano

More than 200 years ago, Moravian missionaries introduced European sacred music to the Inuit people of Labrador.  Across the centuries, Inuit singers and instrumentalists transformed an imported music into a unique expression of Inuit cultural identity.

Makkipok! features some of these beautiful 18th and 19th century classical works for choir and orchestra, reconstructed from original manuscripts found in the churches in Nain, Hopedale and Makkovik.
